Thornycroft Sidings 1924-31 (N gauge)

The Basingstoke and Alton Light Railway

J.I. Thornycroft Ltd. was a renowned commercial vehicle manufacturer in Basingstoke from 1898 to 1972. Set in about 1930 the layout represents one third of the factory site comprising the railway sidings off the Basingstoke & Alton Light Railway serving materials handling areas of the factory.

The model railway was built by Ed and David Smith between November 2013 and August 2015.

The 15 scratchbuilt buildings alone required 5 months of hobby time to research and create. Model vehicles were designed in CAD and 3D printed as kits.

The layout was featured in the February 2020 issue of Railway Modeller magazine.

Looking South. The 'Alton Flyer' passenger train passes by on the light railway from Basingstoke to Alton. A Thornycroft J Class anti-aircraft gun carrier lorry stood alongside the works here during WW2 to ward off enemy airplanes!
